Landscape design
While the Local Centre and Local Centre Open Space proposals will each be subject to separate reserved matters submissions, they have been designed in tandem, and will complement each other – and function as a single integrated scheme – once implemented.
Local Centre Open Space

A welcoming entrance to St James Park with ornamental sweeping hedges

A village green with ornamental planting reflecting the local identity and heritage of Bishop’s Stortford

A large events space which will double the capacity of the community centre capacity and can accommodate a marquee

An enclosed ornamental tiered garden as a backdrop to the events space as a ‘secret garden’
Local Centre

A gateway entrance to the Local Centre with flared steps and wide ramp

A tree canopied courtyard to provide a natural canopy and a cooler atmosphere during heat waves

Raised plants with integrated seating to provide a courtyard garden feel

A cafe ‘spill-out’ area with room for 9 al fresco tables all year round

Bike zones with bug hotel-cycle shelters in the north and south off the cycle route to ensure a safe pedestrianised public realm
A comprehensive and integrated landscape design has been prepared for the Local Centre and the adjacent land reserved for public open space between the Local Centre site and Beaumont Avenue. The strategy has been developed by David Jarvis Associates who designed the landscaping scheme for the wider St James’ Park site.
The Local Centre landscaping scheme is designed to integrate with and complement the wider St James’ Park development. It includes substantial new areas of public realm and community space. It also proposes new trees, climbers and planters within the Local Centre maximising planting on the site, improving biodiversity, and creating a green and pleasant environment which people will want to visit and spend time.
